Description

DHEA is a steroid hormone that has attracted medical attention in recent years. DHEA is produced in the body by the adrenal glands and is necessary for proper health. DHEA has been tested with good results in treating Adrenal Insufficiency, Depression, Obesity, and Systemic lupus erythematosus. It is also being tested for use in health problems including Alzheimer's, Cardiovascular disease, Cervical Cancer, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Cocaine Withdrawal, Menopausal disorders, Infertility and more.

As we age, there's a steady decline in DHEA production, making health supplements of DHEA useful for good health. At all ages, men tend to have higher DHEA levels than women.DHEA is a steroid hormone produced in the body by the adrenal glands. Hormones are small powerful molecules that influence every cell in the body and are necessary for proper health and even life itself. Health disorders can occur when the ratio of hormones becomes out of balance. Therapeutic use has proven hormones to be among the most effective biological agents in treating an endless number of adversities in the body.

Dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA, is a steroid hormone, a chemical cousin of testosterone and estrogen. It is made from cholesterol by the adrenal glands, which sit atop each kidney. For the first few years of life, the adrenals make very little DHEA. Around age six or seven, they begin churning it out. Production peaks in the mid-20s, when DHEA is the most abundant hormone in circulation. From one's early '30s on, there's a steady decline in DHEA production, so the average 75-year-old has only 20% of the DHEA in circulation that he or she had 50 years earlier. At all ages, men tend to have higher DHEA levels than women.

By definition, hormones are chemical messengers made in a gland or tissue that start, stop, or otherwise orchestrate activity in some other issue. That makes DHEA a hormone in name only, since no one knows exactly what it does in the body.

Until recently, the role of DHEA in the body was uncertain. For years it was thought to be a kind of chemical trash left over from making other hormones. Thought to be nothing more than a buffer hormone , DHEA was considered to serve only in the production of other hormones. Scientists now have learned that body cells have DHEA receptors meaning the hormone has a specific role in the body. While it is similar in structure to testosterone, progesterone and estrogen, DHEA has an endless number of functions in the biological spectrum.

The latest research dedicated to DHEA suggests the hormone may be a great benefit in treating an array of health problems.
The Mayo Clinic has assigned the grade of B - "Good scientific evidence for this use" to DHEA for the following health problems:
Adrenal Insufficiency
Depression
Obesity
Systemic lupus erythematosus

Additional studies are being conducted on a long list of diseases and health problems including, Alzheimer's, Cardiovascular disease, Cervical Cancer, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Cocaine Withdrawal, Menopausal disorders, Infertility and many more. At this point more research is needed to determine the effectiveness of DHEA on these problems.
