An estimated 20 million Americans are affected by abnormally high blood sugar levels.
Warning signs include constant thirst, hunger and poor wound healing. If left undiagnosed and untreated the consequences can be severe, if not fatal.
Sugars (glucose) obtained from the diet are distributed to cells via the blood stream. Multiple systems work together to process, store, retrieve, deliver and fill body cells with this energizing nutrient. Normally the body maintains a supply of 70-110 mg of glucose per 100 ml of blood.
If for some reason the glucose concentration is too high, cell damage can occur. To avoid this occurrence, urination increases and excess glucose is spilled out.
The Greek term is diabetes, meaning to pass through. High blood sugar can be caused by failure or inefficiency with any one of the following organ systems which can adversely affect the proper regulation of blood sugar levels:
1. Immune system dysfunction, due perhaps to viral infection or an allergy to dairy protein, can damage the pancreas and inhibit normal insulin production. Insulin is the hormone that feeds glucose to energy-hungry cells.
2. Pancreas stress caused by poor diet, refined sugars or obesity may limit the production of insulin.
3. Pituitary, kidney, thyroid, adrenal or other glandular dysfunction.
Another potential cause may be drug or hormone therapies (such as cortisone) that could lead to drug-induced or steroid-induced blood sugar regulation problems in certain individuals.
